Use This To Up Your Smartphone Filming & Photography – Sandmarc Motion Variable Filter Review
This is the motion filters from sandmark for smartphone, photography and filmmaking. Now before we get into this video. I thought i just mentioned at the very beginning that sandmart did send me this for a review, but this isn’t an ad it’s, not a sponsorship they’re, not telling me what to say. This is my true and unbiased opinion about this filter and for the price of around 75 pounds or a hundred dollars let’s actually see if this filter is worth the money. When you receive the filter, you will get a velcro soft carry case inside here. You will get the motion filter and you will also get the clip which the filter screws onto and allows you to connect it to any phone and sandmar chose to name the filter, a motion filter which basically means it’s a variable, nd filter. It has a spinning ring on the front of the filter, which allows you to choose the intensity of the nd. It goes from nd8 up to md64, which is the equivalent of three to six stops, and if you don’t know what a motion filter or an nd filter is, to put it simply, an nd filter is like putting sunglasses on your camera. It helps to reduce the amount of light hitting your camera’s sensor, and this is very important if you want to take better pictures and videos and be in control of the overall look and feel of the footage. Now, if you use the built in camera, app on your phone to take pictures and videos that app will probably automatically adjust the picture for you, it will adjust your exposure, your white balance and it will adjust all those settings for you, so you don’t have to Which is fine for certain quick snapshots in certain scenarios, but normally, if you want to take slightly better pictures or be in more control, then we will want to control the settings of the actual camera rather than the camera app doing that for us automatically using an Nd filter or this motion filter means that we are reducing the amount of light coming into the camera and hitting our sensor, which means that we can reduce the shutter speed of our camera.
So, for instance, if we’re filming – and we want our footage to look more cinematic, then we’ll probably want to obey by the 180 degree shutter rule, and that basically means that we double our shutter speed to whatever our frame rate is, and that gives us the most Natural looking motion blur the trouble is, if we use that 180 degree rule in bright conditions, there will probably be far too much light coming in and over. Exposing our image. Adding this motion, filter or an nd filter means that we are reducing the amount of light coming in. So the shutter speed can stay double the frame rate and we get that nice natural, looking motion blur so, for instance, at 24 frames. A second we want to use a shutter speed of 148 at 25 frames. We want 150th 30 frames. We want one 60th and 60 frames a second. We want to use one twentieth of a second, and this will give us the most natural looking motion blur. If we don’t do this and our shutter speed is set too high, then our image may look too choppy and super sharp and not very cinematic. And now this is the same shot using the sandmark motion filters and using the filmic pro app to get the correct, shutter speed and, as you can see in this side by side shot the one on the right. Using the sandmark motion filters and the filmic pro app looks far more natural and cinematic Applause Music.
So, as you can see now, i am filming on my phone and it is completely over exposed so i’m just going to put the sound motion filter over the lenses right now and, as you can see, that brings the exposure level back to a normal looking level. So it looks really nice now 150th of a second on the shutter speed and 25 frames. A second is my frames per second, but one thing you might have noticed when i put the filter on it does cover up that front facing microphone on my phone. So if i take it off again now, it would sound, probably a little bit better because that microphone is facing me. This does actually cover up that front facing microphone. So just something to bear in mind. So now let’s take a look at the actual, build quality of these motion filters and they do feel pretty high quality, as the filters are made from aluminium and the glass is multi coated. I really like that. This filter is split into two colors black. On the back and the spinning part on the front is a nice soft grey, and this is where you will find the nd markings which state the nd and show you how many stops of light it’s, reducing when spinning it stops on the lowest and the highest. Nd section, so you can get a feel of where these stops are. I think it would have been really good if there was a slight indication or ridge when i hit each one of those stops that i didn’t have to basically look at it to see which nd i was on.
I could feel it click between each one, but being a variable, nd filter or a motion filter. We don’t actually have to stop on any one of those specific nd points. We can just spin it to get the desired look, but that is why it’s nice to have those stops on each side of the highest and lowest point of the nd that the filter doesn’t just keep spinning round. We’Ve only got this kind of small section, maybe a quarter a quarter of a turn, so we’re not kind of getting lost in it. Just spinning around aimlessly. Also, something else which is really good about this filter is that we don’t get that horrible cross going over. Our footage when we’re spinning it around some other variable nd filters, have this weird kind of cross which goes across the image when we’re spinning it around. But luckily these don’t actually do that. But one thing to mention: if we’re filming and specifically recording audio, then we want to spin the filter before we actually start recording. The main reason is our microphone might pick up the sound of the motion filter spinning around, but once we’re on the subject of that, i would try to get in the habit of setting that motion filter before we start recording there’s a few reasons, one because you Don’T want to get that sound in your shot, two, that your fingers might actually get into shot when we’re, spinning it around and three when you’re spinning it you’re going to be adding extra wobble to your shot, which we don’t want.
So just try to get into the habit of setting that motion filter prior to actually pressing record, so the clip that it comes with is plastic, but the thread is actually metal, so you don’t really have to worry about it. Cross, threading and messing up that filter. The clip also has rubber on the front and the back of it. So when we clip it onto our phone, we don’t have to feel like it’s going to fall off and it gives a nice solid kind of grip to our phone and being rubber. We don’t have to worry about it, potentially scratching the glass on our phones. Another really great thing about the design of this clip and the filter is that if you have a phone with three cameras, then this clips over all three of those cameras and you can then switch between each one of those cameras and the filter. Doesn’T block any of them, even when we use that ultra wide lens, which is awesome previously i’ve used other filters on my phone, which were a lot smaller than this one, and it only covered one camera at a time. So, each time i wanted to change camera, i would then have to unclip it and clip it on each camera each time i wanted to use it, but you can really see that san marcos thought about the design of this and made it a lot bigger. So it covers all three of the camera lenses on my iphone now: i’m, not sure if other manufacturers and different layouts of phones, if that will still be the same case, but for an iphone.
This filter covers all three of them and we can switch between any camera without it blocking any one of those cameras, and this also means that, if you use a case on your phone that these filters will just clip over the phone and the case you already Own i’m, one of those people who never uses a case on my phone. But if you do use a case, then these filters will clip over the top of them also being on a clip like this makes it pretty much universal to fit onto any phone. In the future, so if you decide to upgrade your phone once a year, for instance that this clip should just clip onto your new phone, you don’t have to worry about it, just being designed for a specific phone when you upgrade clip this onto your new one. Well, it should pretty much fit onto any phone in the future, but you know what i mean: it’s, pretty universal you’re not buying into a case which only fits one specific phone. Also. Another good thing is that if you already have other sandmark accessories like the anamorphic wide or macro lens, then these filters fit as they are the same thread size. You can actually thread these filters straight onto those other lenses, so by now, you’ve probably worked out that this motion filter is for people who are really serious about filmmaking and photography on their phones, it’s, not really for just anyone who just wants to take normal snaps.
I don’t really feel like those people will get the benefit out of a motion filter, but if you really want to take your stuff to the next level, a motion filter is a really great thing and pairing it to third party apps to be in more control. For instance, the filmic pro app that basically means that we can then control the iso, the white balance and the shutter speed to get that natural. Looking motion blur. That is, where you’re really going to get the most out of these filters. A normal phone would just capture some really nice looking stuff, but if you really want to take it up a level and be in that full control of of the image and how the light comes into the sensor, then a motion filter is definitely for you. So if you are interested, i will link the filter in the description down below head over and check out, get a bit more information and pick one up if you like. I should also say again thank you to san mart for sending me this filter. It is really great, i’ve really enjoyed reviewing this and all of your other products as well.
