I have to say about it, so let’s talk about why it sucks let’s begin so yeah three months in. I think the main drawback that i talked about in my review and now i sadly have a little bit of an update for you on that is the battery life iphone 12 mini for my day to day tasks has been fine, but on the days when i Drive a little bit more than usual or i go on a little bit of a road trip or i’m gon na be out and away from the house taking pictures recording videos for extended periods of time, that’s. Typically, when i notice the battery life to be a bit of a drawback and as i said in my review, if you were looking for a reason to not get the 12 mini or you’re envious of people who bought the 12 minion thinking – oh maybe i should Have just gone with that? Let battery life be that reason for you to feel good that you did not buy the 12 mini, because i am not quite hitting five hours of screen on time with the current battery capacity and unfortunately, my battery health has already dropped by one percent. So basically, this phone is entirely useless: i’m gon na throw it away now, but no genuinely. I was actually quite surprised by that. I’Ve never had battery health drop so quickly on a phone before and i’ve pretty much exclusively charged.
This thing through magsafe, which is a bit interesting because you know that’s, with optimized battery charging, turned on and that’s through apple hardware, that they recommend shipping, and i am very curious to hear your guys’s thoughts or experiences with your iphone 12 devices. If you guys have been charging exclusively with magsafe, have you noticed the battery health gone down at all? Personally, i don’t think it’s magsafe itself that is causing the health to go down. My guess is that it’s, the fact that the 12 mini battery is so small and, of course, the smaller the battery, the quicker the degradation and on top of that, because the battery’s so small, i drain it a lot faster, so hitting 20 10 and sometimes even Two to one percent: at the end of a busy day of usage, i will hit those low numbers way more often in the past whether it was my 10s max or my 11 pro max. Typically, i would have to really really try hard to get the battery to go down under 10 and, of course, the more often you are killing your battery and depleting it towards zero. Then the more it degrades over time and because on a daily basis, the 12 mini needs to be charged up almost completely. Compared to my last iphone the 11 pro max, where it could comfortably last over a day on a charge, and i would really only have to plug it in at the end of the second day of usage, not the first, and perhaps the fact that i was Charging it via typical normal t chargers which charged at around seven and a half watts, sometimes five, whereas magsafe with the 12 mini, is much more common to go over 10 watts wireless charging and that, of course, can heat up the battery so feel free to.
Let me know what updates you guys have with magsafe charging, and that kind of thing important thing to remember: battery health dropping one percent after three months is really not anything to get upset about. I kind of understand why apple was hesitant to put in these battery health features, because what they do is they kind of make everybody kind of overly concerned over the battery when, in reality, like battery health, will naturally drop over time using your phone is technically bad For the battery so it’s just a matter of how much and if you drop one percent every three months, that still means you’re gon na have over ninety percent. For the large majority of the time, you’re going to be using your iphone and the truth is outside. Of the battery, i have almost zero negative things to say about the 12 mini. I guess there was one circumstance where i was on a hike and i was actually looking down at apple headquarters. I brought my binoculars so that i could try and see what the next iphone looks like it’s, not good, but anyway i was trying to take pictures of apple park and i realized in that situation. I don’t have a telephoto lens, so that was the situation where i felt like i really needed that galaxy s21 ultra space, zoom and because samsung has that space zoom that allows them to zoom in and figure out, ooh apple’s, not shipping the charge, brick anymore.
Let’S. Do that or ooh there’s air tags let’s get the galaxy smart tag out now it all makes sense right, samsung can zoom in they can see all these details. I cannot, sadly, because i opted for such a small iphone. They couldn’t fit a zoom lens on there, but i would say out of the past three months of ownership. That has been the one time where i was like. Ah dang it. I really wish. I had a telephoto here. I guess pretty pandemic when i was out and about more taking more photos outside of just my room. There was probably more circumstances where i appreciated the telephoto, but these days where we go weeks on end without leaving the house, i really haven’t missed it very much and in case, if you’re wondering, based on my whole, torn between the 12 pro max and 12 mini. Do i regret going with the mini after three months? I really don’t actually regret is not a productive emotion in the first place. The best thing regret can do, for you is allow you to try to make better decisions moving forward, but dwelling on the past, which is something you cannot change, is typically just not good for you in general. But on top of that, i have really gotten comfortable with this screen size, and i personally find it amazing how humans can adopt and get comfortable with something in a reasonably small amount of time. I mean it wasn’t, a few hours that i got comfortable with the 12 mini being really really small, but after using it for the past few months.
I have now reached the point where this feels normal. I don’t even look at this anymore as a small phone. It doesn’t feel small, in fact now, when i try any other phone, which of course, these days pretty much everything else is bigger than this. It actually feels enormous or too overbearing, sometimes, which is trippy, because if you watch my videos last year, you know i tried the recently announced iphone se and when i tried that again i was like ooh. This is really small. This is really tiny compared to what i’m used to now. My wife is still using the iphone se this year and when i pick up her phone, it feels big. It feels like a plus sized iphone now and that’s hilarious, because it has a 4.7 inch display, but just because the form factor and the fact that she has a case is bigger than my 12 midi. It makes a phone that i used to think was tiny. Now feel enormous and at the same time, when i watch videos on the 12 mini and when i’m reading the news or checking email or reading text off of this thing, it does not feel like. I settled with a really really tiny phone that’s hard to use. I think the keyboard being so small allows me to use the swipe feature a lot more efficiently, and i must say, even though this does not have the fanciest of cameras in today’s day and age.
The camera has been really really impressive, especially from the main lens. I found myself at home not using ultra wide too much and honestly that’s the place where camera performance was a little bit lackluster this year, i feel, like ultra wide didn’t, really gain much improvement other than night mode, which night mode ultra wide shots. Don’T. Even look very good to me, but i know how we talked a lot about deep fusion in 2019 and 2020. and most of the time people said deep. Fusion is genuinely appreciated when you have like you, know, yarn knitted sweaters in certain types of clothing, but i would argue that deep fusion makes a huge difference with food, which is a bit of a habit. I’Ve picked up don’t. Ask me why, but me and my wife like to journal what we’re doing every single day, what our activities entail and also we like to write down what we had for lunch and dinner in any particular day, and that is made a lot easier when before we Eat anything we basically just take a picture of it: i’m, not posting it anywhere. I just want to be able to go back and look and think hmm on september 4th 2016. What did i have for dinner that day, we’re weird, i know but it’s my life. Stop judging deep fusion with food looks really really crispy and detailed, and no pun intended, but the amount of detail i get out of some of these food pictures that we end up taking is extraordinary and the dynamic range of pictures after i take them, has been Really really impressive and i don’t care about the 4k at 30fps dolby vision, hdr stuff, because if you try to use that file on any other machine, it looks terrible and hdr on the iphone with dolby vision and all that really just feels like every time you Open that video file, it decides to crank up the brightness past, a thousand nits, and it doesn’t even feel like.
The range is really that dynamic i’m sure it technically. Is it just doesn’t feel like it? It just feels like it wants to boost up the brightness, and my brightness is like intentionally low, sometimes to just not bother my eyes and if i bring up an hdr video it’s, just like okay it’s bright now, thanks wow, look at that dynamic range and it Takes up more space on icloud storage and on your phone, so i would highly encourage people who are thinking i’m, just gon na record everything in dolby vision that way, it’s like built for the future and it’s gon na age super well, yeah it’s, probably eating through Your icloud faster and taking up more space on your phone, which has not been an issue with this i’m, very grateful. I went with the 128 gig variant because i do take a lot of videos and pictures on here and being able to store them locally. Is awesome, camera’s, fantastic? The display is still plenty bright for what i need. I’Ve used this in direct sunlight not had a problem. Battery life is probably the biggest weakness. Not probably, it is okay, i’m comfortable, saying that and now seeing the battery health dip to 99 bums me out a bit, but i still plan on keeping the 12 mini, even after i upgrade later in the year, so i’m, a big sucker for 120 hertz. So as soon as an iphone has that i don’t really care what size.
It is i’m, getting one to be honest with you if they released a new mini iphone, which they might not because the sales for this have been so terrible. But if they do – and it has no charge port a bit better battery life and 120 hertz, i would get that one because i have fallen in love with the 5.4 inch form factor and i don’t hate the max sized iphones and i’ll probably end up switching To that later this year, but my wife has already expressed that she would like to switch to the 12 mini once i upgrade to the 12 s or 13 or whatever, and because we know that the sales for the mini are so bad, which really bums me Out because i think this is an awesome phone and there’s, not enough competition in the compact smartphone market right now, so if apple ends up not releasing more of these or only doing one more mini iphone, then i want to hold on to this thing as long As i can, and my wife wants to use it for many many years and i don’t want to get rid of it because i feel like this might be a rare and unique special chapter in apple’s history. And we need to appreciate it because the the gaming performance has been great. I love how loud the speakers get as well. Build quality is excellent. I haven’t noticed any scratches on the front or back.
The aluminum has aged much much better and the matte finish along the sides looks way more sleek and cool than the stainless steel on the 12 pro so i’m. Very thankful. I got this. I just wish the battery was a little bit better and honestly. I would be very, very tempted, like if there’s no 120 hertz on any of the iphones, but they decided to make a 12 s mini and it didn’t have lightning. There was no charge port, but the battery was bigger. Oh i i would be tempted, but i don’t think i would do it because i don’t run into circumstances enough where the battery life is a problem. It just happens probably two or three out of the past 90 days like where i run into a situation, taking lots of pictures, recording lots of videos, doing lots of gps navigation and that type of thing i’m, like okay, i got ta get near a charger, but Outside of that, 12 mini has been awesome and i would still recommend it to a huge number of people and i feel like it’s. Incredibly underrated and i’ve noticed the same thing from everyone who has bought and used a 12 mini. They seem to love it and i don’t recall a lot of people buying the 12 mini and keeping it for a few months and then saying uh. You know what i don’t really care for this. There might be some owner’s bias in there.
You know you bought it so you’re inclined to like it, but either way i’m grateful for it, and i hope you guys are too so thanks all for watching. This is your app sweep here.
