So in cases like that, i reach for the camera that i always have with me, and that is my smartphone. This is my samsung galaxy s10 inside of the new road of vlogger kit, so in today’s, video i’m going to tell you more about when and why i use my smartphone to vlog and tell you more about the accessories that come with the rode vlogger kit. So let’s start off with a quick size comparison. Yes, the gopro is still a lot smaller than my overall phone, but i still have my phone with me all the time, just because it’s more than a camera phone and it’s actually a little bit better than the gopro in certain situations, such as in low lighting, It’S, an absolute monster, this giant beast is this thing so cool so yeah? This is our xt3 with the gopro hero 9 on top and yeah. This is a massive gimbal. If you’re new here my name is susie. My partner martin and i use this channel to talk about some of the camera gear that we use to film our vlogs that go over on our travel vlogging channel. So if you’re new here and you like what we do please consider subscribing. But anyway, since day, one of this channel, we have always embraced using smartphones to film photos and videos and that’s. One of many reasons why we were so excited when rode reached out to us asking if we wanted to test out their new vlogging kit.
And yes, that is rode as in the microphone makers. This is one of their microphones, the rode videomicro, but we have so many rode microphones, i’m, actually filming with one right here. The rode videomic pro plus so we’ve been long time, fans of rode and their microphones and we’re really excited that they’re branching out to now target vloggers by offering an entire kit full of accessories to expand your smartphone filmmaking and vlogging. One of the first main pieces is this tripod. It is really strong and sturdy it’s made of plastic, which keeps it really lightweight, and it has the three legs that pop out like this. There is a ball head that rotates really easily and also it rotates into the vertical position in case you want to film vertical photos or videos. The tripod also has a standard quarter, inch tripod thread on top, which is nice, because that makes this tripod versatile. You don’t have to use it with the smartphone vlogging kit. You can actually put any small camera that you want on this tripod, including the gopro. As long as you have the gopro mount adapter. The next part of the kit is this: smartphone mount adapter it’s made of a really sturdy metal, and it has a screw here that you can loosen to change the size to fit just about any kind of smartphone that you have. So even the larger smartphones, such as my samsung galaxy s10 or the iphone pro versions will fit inside of this mount adapter.
The bottom of the adapter has a standard quarter, inch tripod hole that attaches to the tripod in a matter of seconds, once you have the adapter on the tripod. Next, you want to put your phone inside of it. This again is the samsung galaxy. S10 i’ve got it inside of a moment case, and i have one of the moment lenses on the front. This is the little fisheye lens, so the really nice thing about using a tripod like this is that you can use just about any case or little accessories, including lenses on your phone. You don’t have to worry about compatibility like you would on a gimbal because gimbals, because of the way that they balance they’re a little bit more finicky, so they don’t always work when you’re using your phone with a case or accessories such as lenses. So, besides being all metal, i really like this smartphone mount adapter for two other reasons: number one there are some quarter inch tripod threads on the side of the mount here in case you want to add extra accessories to the side and on top there’s, also a Cold shoe mount for adding more accessories, which comes in really handy for these next two pieces. That i’m going to show you. How much difference does a tripod make in the stability of your video, because, obviously a tripod is a gimbal it’s, not gon na give you ultra stable footage, but it still will be better than holding the phone handheld.
This is what it would look like with the exact same settings for shooting in 4k. I have my optical stabilization on and having to hold the phone now with two hands so yeah, if i’m, just like walking and trying to vlog without a tripod and because the phone is so big it’s like you have to find where to hold your hand, but Even then like having that tripod is really going to help you either vlogging or just walking forward, giving you some stability and making it not so jittery and also getting the phone further away from your face. So the next part of the vlogging kit is the microphone in this case it’s the rode video micro, so we’re going to put it up on the cold shoe mount here and then we’re going to plug in the cable to the 3.5 millimeter mic jack that’s. On my phone, so the rode videomicro can actually be used with either regular cameras like dslrs, mirrorless cameras, gopros or it can be used with a smartphone. What matters is the cable that it comes with, and in this case we have a trrs, cable and the trrs cable is made to be used with smartphones. If you want to use this microphone with another camera, then you have to pick up a trs cable, which is pretty easy to find and if you just plug this into the microphone instead, you can use the microphone with another camera that’s, not a smartphone, so the Versatility of this microphone is really appreciated for those of us who often film with two or three different cameras when we’re out on the fields, we again tend to use our gopro as our main vlogging camera, the smartphone as a backup vlogging camera and our mirrorless cameras.
As b roll cameras to get really nice pretty scenic shots now there are several different versions of this road vlogging kit, depending on what kind of camera phone that you have, because camera phones are coming with all kinds of different microphone connections. These days, if you get the iphone version, i believe that, instead of the rode video micro, it now comes with the rode videomic me. This is the microphone that we used to use with our older samsung phones, and this one again has a 3.5 millimeter mic jack, but i think that there are versions now that come with the lightning cable connector instead, so this microphone is a little bit different and Instead of putting it up top with the cold shoe mount, you would just attach this to the bottom of your phone like this. The next piece of the vlogging kit is a micro led light. This is a rode branded light and it is really strong there’s. Actually, several different brightness levels that you can control using the top button. It can get extremely blindingly bright, which is one of the reasons why they also include an optional diffuser. You can put on the front of the light so that the light isn’t so harsh, the diffuser – can be a neutral white like this, or you can change it out with a variety of colors with all of these nice color filters that they also include in the Kit, this light is rechargeable via the usbc port.
On the side, there is also usbc cable included in the kit, and it comes in really handy when you’re trying to film in really dark places like way after sunset, when you’re trying to film at night or, if you’re inside, of a dark room. And you need a little bit of extra light. This is when the micro led light comes in really handy. Filter makes a pretty big difference. If that filter is off, then that’s such a strong light. It really shouldn’t be in anybody’s face here in this channel. We’Ve really been embracing, led lights more frequently, because we mainly use our gopro, which absolutely sucks in low lighting. So as a result, we’ve used the led light to expand how long we can keep filming throughout the day so that we don’t have to stop filming. After sunset, and even those smartphones are generally pretty good at filming in low lighting, it still really helps to have an led light in case you end up in a super dark situation all right. This is our check in for night one at our campsite and we have fire going. The stars are coming out and we feel fantastic yeah. It took some work to get to this point. We had to set up the fire and pay and all this other stuff at the campground setup, 10 blah blah now it’s extremely pleasant. Now i’ve always said that smartphones have really good internal microphones, because their core function is to pick up sound and transmit it via the phone function, and so i still think that’s true.
You can get away with vlogging with a smartphone without an external microphone. However, adding an external microphone really levels up your sound, and that is super important if you’re a vlogger. If you’re wondering just how effective this rode, video micro is we’re going to do a test so right now the rode video micro is plugged in and it’s recording. Our sound, it also has a wind muff on it, so it should be doing a pretty good job but i’m going to unplug it here and we’ll see what the difference is all right. Now that rode videomicro has been unplugged. So if you didn’t use an external microphone, this is what your audio would sound. Like probably doesn’t sound that bad, but i do hear planes going by overhead and there might be some wind, so you’re, probably gon na hear a little bit more ambient noise. But you might notice that if you have the android version of this kit, that your rode videomicro is taking up that cold shoe spot, so rode includes another piece to help. You add other accessories, such as this micro led light to the top of your cold shoe mount it’s, a really simple, but really handy accessory, and that is a metal piece with two cold shoe mounts. So now we can add our microphone to one slot and our micro led light to the other slot. Then we’re gon na take this bar with the two accessories on it and mount it to the top of the smartphone mount.
And now we have our full vlogging kit, while we were walking this trail in this forest and we came across a pretty cool thing that we’re spending a lot of time playing with the gimbal but it’s the bottom of this tree here. So this is what happens when trees fall over you get like the big log. On the other side, the trunk kind of came down and they’re kind of preserving it here. It’S probably been down for a long time, so, no matter what camera phone you’re using a good rule of thumb, is to set the image quality at the highest possible. In this case, it’s 4k also make sure that your optical image stabilization is switched to on and also make sure to shoot in the widest lens possible to give you the widest field of view and also produce the smoothest most stable footage. So there you have it. This is road’s very first vlogging kit and i really like that they invested in some high quality accessories that will work with just about any smartphone. You can also use it with cameras that are not smartphones, so i like the functionality of all of these accessories and how they’re not limited to certain models of smartphones or smartphones in general. So let me know what you guys think in the comments below about rode’s.
