So this is the huawei mate. X2 i’ve already made a video on this phone. So if you saw that video, you will probably know that i am very much blown away by the hardware, one of the biggest reasons. I’M, so impressed with this hardware, despite the fact that iod only galaxy phone 2 is because huawei managed to put a premium flagship level camera system into a folding phone samsung has not been able to do that. The camera system in the gaussian z42 and in the z flip, are both technically inferior to what’s used in the galaxy s and note series so, for example, huawei managed to cram a periscope zoom lens into this camera system. In fact, the camera system here is very, very similar to the camera system used in the huawei p40 pro plus, which i reviewed about half a year ago. If you remember, i was blown away by that camera system and i called it the best camera hardware i’ve seen yet at the time, but the new challenger arrived a couple months ago in the form of the galaxy s21 ultra. When i tested this phone, i thought that this camera system may be actually better than the huawei p4a pro plus system, but i couldn’t really decisively say that, because i no longer have a p40 pro plus, i made the test, but now i do technically because the Huawei, mate x2 uses the same camera system as a pre 40 pro plus, so i figured might as well do a camera shootout between the galaxy s21 ultra and the huawei mate x2, because these two are definitely the top two camera systems around.
But anyway enough talking let’s get to the test. Music first shot. Let’S do a standard one times image: okay, so i’m gon na wait until i do all the tests and then i’m gon na load, all the photos onto my computer and examine them and i’ll do a voice over to kind of examine the results. Let’S switch to the second test: ultra wide angle: camera, okay, ultra sharp s21 ultra ultra wide sharp huawei, mate, x2; okay, next up let’s do three times: optical zoom, okay, so there’s three times zoom with the s21 ultra okay. Now i got three times zoom with the may x2: okay, let’s bump it up to 10 times, so this is 10 times zoom. The s21 ultra i’m gon na take a couple of shots: okay, may x2: okay, let’s change up the scene a little bit and get the same four shots, so we have ultra wide with the galaxy s21 ultra main camera of the gaussian 21 ultra three times. Zoom 10 times zoom, okay may x2 ultrawide three times ten times, zoom, okay, while we’re. Here we might as well test 100 times zoom. So this is the maximum zoom of both phones. So we’ll do one at a time zoom on to this sign here. Okay, now we are 100 times zoom, with the huawei mate x2 to see the huawei makes this one time. Zoom is it’s struggling with focus a little bit and it’s a little bit jittery.
So this is an area that i figured the s21 ultra was gon na win because samsung developed this zoom, lock technology, so right now, i’m holding the phone with one hand and zooming 100 times and look at how stable this looks. I can keep it still like this, because the ai has already locked onto that sensor, now see i’m trying to do the same with the may x2 and i can’t quite hold still it’s still kind of jerky. You know: okay, next test video performance, so i’m, going to shoot 4k 30 videos with both of these phones and i’m going to make sure i move around just to see stabilization, how i handle those color signs dynamic range all that so both of these are shot With the main camera right now, Music, okay, now i’m going to switch to the ultra wide angle sensor, both lenses – you can do so in real time on both sensors. So now we’re shooting the ultra wide angle. Camera let’s check out dynamic range, both still look on point okay, so this is the huawei mate x2. This is the galaxy s21 ultra. Both of these are 1080p 30 video selfie. I think the colors look a little bit more accurate on the galaxy s21 ultra right now, at least on the screen right now. The huawei mate x2 is completely blowing out. The sky above me like the sky, should not look so white. Okay, let’s move to another location for the next test: apologies if it’s been a little bit loud out here, that’s just hong kong.
In a nutshell, this is one of the loudest cities in the whole world. Okay, so for this test this is a challenging shot because i’m pointing it directly at the sun right now. So you see the camera i’m shooting with now the sony zv1 can’t even really handle it. The sky’s completely blown out and the building is completely dark, but smartphones will be able to find i’m pretty sure the s21 ultra and the huawei mates 2 will be able to find a better balance. Let’S put them to the test, so this is that’s 21. Ultra right now, with the main camera, and now this is the mate x2, with the main camera now let’s do ultra wide ultra wide s21 ultra okay, next up we’re gon na test portraits both of these phones have three times optical zoom lenses with 70 millimeter focal Lengths these are ideal focal lengths for portraits, so you’ll see right now, i’m kind of far away from the camera. But my girlfriend’s going to bring up both of the phones there’s 21 ultra first and you see that when the phone is pointing at me, it’ll be three times zoom and it’ll be a proper portrait focal length. So all right now let’s test night photography. So, as you can see, it’s actually not that dark out right now, because hong kong is always well lit. So this is just night photo in the city, not quite low light for low light.
I’Ll have to go into a room and turn off the lights. So that’s 21, ultra 1x, zoom s21 ultra ultra wide angle, camera ultra 10 times zoom, okay, mx2, 1x, ultrawide mix to 10 times zoom, okay, nighttime video same thing: 4k, 30. Footage on both wow, you see in video. The s21 also looks much brighter than the may x2 right now. The mix 2’s footage looks pretty good still just not as like artificially well lit. Alright guys i’ve been examining these photos not just on this laptop, but on my larger dell monitor for the past 30 minutes. Let’S. Look at these shots, so we’ll start with the standard photo point and shoot with the main camera outside earlier. To be honest during the day, it’s really too close to call it comes down to a matter of preference. Samsung’S colors tend to be a little bit punchier, but if you actually go closer, you see that huawei’s shot has a little bit more details and sharpness. Now, even though the galaxy s21 ultra has a 108 megapixel camera and the mate x2 has a 50 megapixel after the pixel bin, the mate x2 photo is actually a larger file. It’S a 12.5 mega pixel shot, whereas the gaussian 21 ultra is just a 12 megapixel shot. Huawei shot is just a little bit more detailed right here around the leaves and there’s also more texture. If you look at the cement blocks down here, it’s a little bit more detailed than the galaxy s21 ultras let’s, look at let’s look at a more challenging shot.
So this is that backlit shot that i mentioned earlier. So both of these shots turned out really damn good. You know even the camera that i’m shooting this with right now could not find dynamic range. So you see both of them got the sun properly exposed it doesn’t blow out. The sun you’ll see that there’s 21 ultra lights up the building a little bit more than the may x2, but this is a stylistic choice. I think dynamic range for both of these are excellent, but just for the sake of argument, if you want the most balanced shot, i think i have to give the winter that’s 21 ultra now let’s look at nighttime photos of the main camera, so we have the S21 ultra on the left, and then we have the mate x2 on the right. So both of these shots look great just on the screen. Right now, when it’s shrunken down a little bit, both look great and it’s hard to tell which one’s better. But if you go a little closer go to actual size right now, you’ll see the mate x2 shots just a little bit better, all around there’s, just a little bit more noise and grain all around in the s21 ultra shot compared to the mate x2. Now this problem is going to be compounded in extreme low light conditions like right now in my room i’m, going to turn off the lights and just check out the may x2 photo it’s a lot brighter than the s21 ultra.
The max 2 can pull light uh. Seemingly nothing not just because of the larger image sensor, but also because of the ryyb filter, which is more sensitive to light. Likewise, right here, the main x2 shots on the right. You can still see my bed a little bit. You can still see there’s some clothes on the bed was that 21 ultra my bed it’s a lot darker now keep in mind. I did not turn on night mode for either of these shots, because the point is to test point and shoot next up. Let’S check up, though next up let’s check out the ultra wide angle camera. So we have the s21 ultra here. This is a wider shot than huawei’s, because the galaxy s21 ultra is ultra wide, has a 13 millimeter focal length, whereas the max 2 has a 17. But once again, if you zoom into actual size, you’ll see that the may x2 ultra wide angle. Camera is just a lot sharper and right now, both of these are 100 actual size and the main x2 photo is just a little bit larger and a little bit more detail, it’s the same story at night. If you go in the actual size of the ultra wide angle, camera you’ll see the may x2 shot is just a little bit more detailed sharper all around. However, if you care about getting more into a frame, because you can argue that the point of ultra riding on camera is to get more into the frame, then the acronym also just gives you a more dynamic, more immersive point of view.
Okay, now let’s look at 10 times zoom, so this is during the day with good lighting actual size. Both of these are really damn good, but i think that’s 21 ultra’s shot is just a little bit cleaner, the colors a little bit more dynamic. The blue here is a little bit muted. I just think there’s 21 ultra. This is a better looking shot all around. If you look at the numbers down here, they’re also a little bit sharper than on the mate x2 2., and now we have the same 10 times zoom shot, but at night now so now the playing field evens up a little bit. Both these shots are slightly blurry. When you go up to 100 like actual size. Now you can’t quite tell which shot is better. They look about the same. So i think in general, if you’re, shooting in good lighting conditions, that’s 21 all shows 10 times, zoom it’s a little bit better. But then, if you’re shooting in low light conditions – and they both look relatively the same, i do think that’s, 21 ultra’s colors. Look a little bit better than the may x2 let’s check out another 10 times zoom. So this is a reference image: i’m gon na zoom all the way into this patio right here. Okay, i have both shots here again for 10 times zoom. Both of these are really clean. Looking okay, so this video is getting a little bit too long, so it’s time to wrap it up.
To be honest, both these cameras are amazing and absolutely the two best camera hardware around, but if you want the best ultra low light performance and also you want a really detailed, ultra wide angle shot, then the huawei’s system is still the way to go. However, if you’re just shooting normal photos at a normal focal length or if you’re taking portrait shots, i think the s21 ultra is better. The s21 ultra’s video footage is also a little bit better, more fluid than the huawei’s video footage, but huawei’s videos, but huawei’s videos have better sound. My voice just sounded fuller on huawei’s videos, but um either way. Both of these are really damn good systems. So that’s about it for this video man, i have to go get dinner now.
