I generally don’t like to do negative reviews and i’ve often found that even the cheapest most low budget, most random tech products could have an audience. They could have a use case. They could work for somebody somewhere, but with this phone right now, i just genuinely do not believe that that’s true. This is a phone that you simply should not buy for a few reasons, not just because it has a micro usb port for charging, which is ridiculous. For a phone released in 2021, not just because it has camera specs and capabilities comparable to a mid 2000s flip phone again, not something that should be present even on the cheapest of cheap phones released nowadays. Now the main reason you should avoid this phone is because performance wise this device is a clunky frustrating to use kind of smartphone an experience i haven’t had in a while and compared to dozens of other smartphones out there. This is, in my opinion, the worst way to spend a hundred and fifty dollars i’m, not talking about gaming performance or multitasking performance or anything extreme i’m. Talking about your average everyday web browsing app, installing weather checking youtube watching performance. This phone, i totally understand, is for folks on a budget who maybe aren’t big on smartphones to start with, who just need a text messaging phone calling google searching device to stay minimally connected to the world, but even for those folks, there are countless other devices on The market even cheaper than this one, even older than this one that perform better with everyday tasks.
To give you an idea of what you might experience with this phone, the rest of this review is just going to be me actually using the device pretty much uncut in a way that average everyday people might interact with their smartphone. I’Ll walk you through the things i was thinking about when i was tapping away on this thing. I’Ll go over some consistent issues of apps you’ll, see all the hang ups, the blips the load times, and hopefully these next few minutes will give you a genuine impression of what using this phone is, like, maybe i’m being overdramatic, maybe i’m overreacting. I know the standard of tech and smartphones and speed is super high, but i stand by what i say and maybe you’ll feel the same way by the end, my problems with this phone begin almost immediately when i first get a device i like to set it Up from start to finish, out of the box, see the stock apps that are installed check for updates and then usually download the samsung smart switch app after the fact to transfer some data over from other phones. But for whatever reason i couldn’t download the smart switch app onto this phone from the play store it just wouldn’t install no matter how many times i tried i’ve never experienced this issue before i didn’t find a solution. Really. I couldn’t even download the raw apk file from the web that wouldn’t work either. So initially i went through and just factory reset the phone went through setup again and during setup that’s, when smart switch worked.
I later saw the additional link to smart switch at the bottom of the reset page tapping on that did download the app, but i had already gone through the reset process, the first time anyway. So it wasn’t helpful and by the way after deleting the smart, switch app and trying to reinstall it again, just to see it once again would not reinstall. So i have no idea what the deal is with this and no this phone doesn’t currently have any software updates, pending or even app updates at the moment. So i don’t really know what the issue was. So naturally i spend a majority of my time on my phone watching youtube videos and you guys might remember in my unboxing video for this device. I had choppy laggy video playback almost right away now. Fortunately, that hasn’t happened at least as often as it initially occurred. Videos generally play back smoothly now, which is good. I guess, though, that shouldn’t be an accomplishment. Obviously, you can see some blips when you scroll the load times in general are noticeable when you’re jumping between videos or searches or whatever else, it’s an experience you could probably handle but it’s, not something i enjoyed and it’s just consistently inconsistent. This sort of thing shouldn’t be an issue at all for any phone. Nowadays, you should just be able to watch videos on your phone pretty easily and while you kind of can it’s just not great – and i don’t consider this to be a particularly taxing activity for a 150 smartphone, so that’s, why i already have some trouble looking past.
This now let’s say you want to maybe have a video playing while you also do something else like checking the weather or browsing the web again, i don’t consider this to be a difficult thing to handle, but on this phone i think you can see almost immediately That there’s, an even further drop off in performance load times for apps and web pages, are long on their own. But when this one is doing two things at once, it feels like those load times almost double, and while you can probably get away with viewing simple, apps and basic web pages, when you start to load up some more complex websites with images and ads and videos, The phone pretty much has a meltdown espn, for example. Here is a fairly busy sort of website. I understand that, but you can see that there’s, just always a lag with page loads, there’s, always something that’s missing. There’S always a delay with scrolling you’ll start to see more and more also that i get caught with accidental taps and swipes on different things. When i think a page or a link is loaded and it’s, not from this point on the experience with the phone grows. Just increasingly more frustrating the next set of things i tried to do was go from browsing something on the web, like the amazon website, for example, and then just installing the dedicated app when it popped up, which i think totally makes sense, there’s an app for everything.
A phone like this should be able to install some apps, at least, i would think i don’t think that’s asking too much and i think most people when they come across their favorite website or whatever that’s, offering an app they’ll, probably like to install it. So initially the amazon website you can see was kind of clunky on its own, but jumping back into the google play store and attempting to install the dedicated app once again just yielded incredibly long load times, and this is for an app that’s, a relatively small size. For a download and should be like a quick 15 second install from start to finish, if that, but no with this phone, it takes more than a full minute to install the amazon app. So you can imagine how long it might take to download and install a handful of other apps and bigger downloads like games and things just not a very good experience, but here’s, where things get even worse after installing the amazon app and attempting to open it. For some reason it jumped back to the web and then froze completely. I don’t know if that’s, an amazon thing or a google play store thing or what, but you can see the actual app didn’t even launch at all. So from this point i just decided to quit the like four apps that were running and start fresh. The amazon app did install properly. Fortunately, so there’s no issues there, but again even the app itself was just slow and clunky and took forever to finally load a page in full and, in fact, i’d argue that the app experience for something like amazon here was worse than the actual website.
And i don’t really understand why it’s not unusable it’s, just a frustrating experience waiting for these things to load and accidentally tapping on things that haven’t loaded and having this glitchy laggy scrolling sort of experience. There’S, no reason things should be this bad now. I know a lot of people get these phones to use, as maybe secondary or backup devices for google maps, for example, or maybe they’re on the road a lot and just need a cheap, simple phone for google maps as their primary device. But this ain’t, it google maps, is probably one of the slowest clunkiest google apps on this phone and you’ll see here that even the simple stuff, like just navigating around an area, picking out a location and checking out the details, it’s all just not a great experience. Beyond that let’s say you maybe want more details about something that you’re looking at. Maybe the place. You’Re browsing has a website, maybe a booking website for a hotel or something just something on the internet that you need to get to, while jumping back from the app to the internet again led me to long load times frozen pages missed and messed up taps on Things i thought were loaded but weren’t and for some reason i got completely lost here with what app was even open and what pages i was looking at seriously. I literally lose my train of thought when i use this phone that’s how slow and frustrating it is, and again this is stuff that should just be easy on any phone.
Nowadays, you should be able to install apps relatively quickly. You should be able to browse the web and expect pages to load successfully in a timely manner. You should be able to load up something on google maps and search for more details or browse an area. I don’t think that’s asking a lot, but for this phone, a majority of the time it just could not handle it, and i don’t understand why the weirdest thing about this phone, though, is that for some crazy reason. If you wanted to do some actual gaming, once you get past the half an hour, it’ll take to download and install any given game, and once you get past the three to five minutes it takes to actually get into the game playing. The actual game is surprisingly good. Like it’s, not flawless, things are slow, the pages are slow, the animations are slow, but in game things are playable like weirdly playable like i’d, rather play need for speed on this phone for an hour, rather than attempting to find the location of something on google maps. For 30 seconds – and i just don’t – understand what’s going on here with that – and let me just be clear one more time: i’m not suggesting this phone is a good gaming device. If you have 150 bucks to spend, you can get something better than this for sure, but this phone shouldn’t be a device where games are decent, but web browsing is unbearable.
It should be the other way around the day to day software experience should be solid. The important easy stuff should be flawless and the more extreme stuff should have trouble this phone i don’t think, is for gamers. This phone is for people who need a basic, simple device that just works. Instead, i see a device that doesn’t really work for the simple, easy stuff and instead has this weird backdoor decently. Good gaming experience on an otherwise clunky device and just makes no sense, and for those of you who might be keen on knowing the actual internal specs. This phone has a four year old, quad, core mediatek processor and either two or three gigs of ram mine has the three gigs surprise surprise. This is where your problem lies. You can see the geekbench scores there and yeah it’s really that bad compare those numbers to any phone released in the last three years and i’m. Pretty sure this thing is at the very, very bottom of the list, so all in all i’m, obviously pretty disappointed with the samsung galaxy a02 and that’s a shame because in general the last couple of years, samsung’s lowest end phones have all been pretty good. The a10, a10e and a10s were great value devices a couple of years ago and actually i’d still recommend those two year old phones right now over this one. If you want a cheap device, get an a10e that’s, still a great phone.
Also, last year, the a01 was solid and pretty unique, and the a11 had plenty of potential too. This a02 is just a worse phone objectively than anything. Samsung has out right now and anything they launched in probably the last two or three years, and i think, even for free, even for like a no money prepaid contract, you probably still should not get this phone get the a02s instead it’s like the same price and It’S about five times as better in every respect, performance, wise, camera wise. It actually offers a lot for the money or get the a12 it’s a step up, it’s a little more money. But it too is a really good value which shouldn’t be too tough to offer. But apparently that is for some reason in fact, just get any other phone seriously: i’d spin the wheel and take a random device launched within the last two years over this one it’s, just not worth the money. So there you go. Those are my harsh but honest thoughts on the samsung galaxy a02, at least right now, maybe down the line. Some software updates will happen to this phone and things could potentially get better if that’s the case. Maybe i’ll have an updated review in the future, but at least right now, the next couple of weeks, probably the next couple of months. This is how this phone is, and these are my thoughts on the experience. What do you guys think am i overreacting? Is it a bit much? Let me know in the comments down below i’d love to hear your thoughts about this phone, but hopefully you guys did enjoy this video, be sure to follow tech daily on twitter and subscribe the tech daily youtube channel.
