It launched late 2019, but became widely available throughout 2021 or 2020. Excuse me, and then later in the year of 2020, they came out with the 5g version of this phone. Along with the a71. However, the a51 went on to be one of the best selling phones period, not just samsung. It was one of samsung’s best sellers, but it went on to be one of the best selling phones period for the entire year globally last year. So this phone is well recognized and i think we’re gon na see the a52 on march 17th coming up at this upcoming unpacked event. So mark your calendars for that. But let me share with you what i think about this phone after one year of just checking. It out reviewing it and stuff like that, so this phone right here does have a plastic frame here so around the edges. You will see plastic on this device. However, it does do a good impression of looking just like an aluminum build or looking just like you could say, a glass or stainless steel kind of look on the back as well. So it just kind of has this impression. So somebody sees this it’s going to look just like a glass phone, just like a flagship grade device and when you combine the samsung branding a flagship, looking device with an oled display on the front. You have a recipe for success here and samsung knew what they were doing when they made this one, because it went on to be such a great seller.
172 grams. This phone never really felt like nothing super heavy, and i always thought that this phone kind of just gave the impression that you got a really good value for the money so design. I still think it looks good here in 2021, it doesn’t really look dated at all to be quite fair with you. It kind of looks similar to the s20 fe and the other s20s of last year, but still a very overall good looking device. Even now. Now it does have a gorilla glass 3 front, so it’s not the best when it comes to overall protection, but it’s, solid, gorilla, glass 3 is nothing to you know, laugh at it’s, pretty good overall protection, it’s, not 5 or anything like victus, but it’s pretty decent. Now revisiting display this is a super amoled display 6.5 inches and it does have nice vivid and natural modes. This does have the one ui 3 as well we’ll talk about that in a little bit how it did get updated to that, but it has dark modes. It does have blue light filters. It basically has what you get on premium devices at 405, ppi too, the display was always sharp enough to do. Reading and stuff like that. So i got ta say this 20 by nine aspect. Ratio, though, does give the a51 like a lot of samsung phones, kind of this tall and narrow kind of feel here. So it’s not a super wide phone overall, but it does give you at least a large 6.
5 inch display. Now one area where i think that it does struggle a little bit is having no 90 hertz and no 120 hertz. Now a lot of phones in this price range you know from xiaomi and other competitors have come out with displays that are a little bit. You know smoother than this, so we do want to see on the a52 a smoother display, because you can definitely see it, especially on these slower mid range phones. They can definitely benefit even more from 90 hertz, giving them the impression that they’re, smoother and faster than they really are, whereas on flagship devices they’re super fast, so even with 90 hertz it’s, not as noticeable as it would be on something like a mid range device. So definitely think it could benefit from that, although it’s not bad, once you get it booted up, there are some delays and a little bit of stutters here and there i would say in terms of the overall display refresh and another thing, this phone does have a Tiny chin down here that could be improved as well going forward. I think we could stretch that display down just a bit but overall it’s pretty acceptable again i’m, going to go back to the price for the price it’s pretty acceptable overall design on the front with the punch hole camera up here. Does doesn’t really have much to speak of in terms of you know, super big bezels. They just don’t exist here now.
Thoughts on software i’m actually pretty happy with the overall software here for the samsung galaxy, a51 and that’s, because samsung went ahead and they gave it its one ui three here, so a lot more up to date. Here you have the translucent looking effects here in the quick panel, everything looks just like a galaxy s21, which is very nice. In addition, this phone also does give you updates still security updates and stuff like that, although i do find the a series does get kind of you know left behind a little bit, it’s like the last one they do before, like they do them. After the galaxy s, series that series and the flagship grade get them first, and then you get it on your a series. Phones, but at least you are getting updates and you do have basically all the same functionality that you’ll get on the s series phone. So this is what has always made the galaxy a series, a very compelling option, so many features set here and such a cheap device. So you don’t have to pay a thousand bucks to experience what samsung has to offer, at least in the way of their software. Now i will say that i have been finding the performance on this phone just a little bit disappointing and mostly because it just kind of takes a while for apps to open up when you pop them open, they’re, just a little bit slow and you can kind Of see this, like animation chop, it’s just a little bit slow, we need to see 90 hertz on this phone and we need to see, i think, a little bit of a better processor, because the 9611 in here 10 nanometer cpu, is not the best with six Gigs of ram it held apps pretty well and i’m, not saying this is not functional.
If it wasn’t functional millions of people wouldn’t have bought this. It definitely works pretty well. When it first starts up, it’s definitely slow to get going, though it takes a few seconds for it to kind of boot up, but then once it gets warmed up and you’re using it. It does seem pretty decent, but i got ta say you can just kind of see it. It just there’s just something about it. Just kind of feels a little bit choppy now. One of the areas that’s also pretty good value in this phone is the storage, because you can get this thing with 128 gigabytes. You can also get this thing with expandable memory, so you can put expandable memory in here. You have expandable memory, usually you’re, going to get that on cheaper phones like this. In addition, you will have yourself a headphone jack on this phone, so i do think samsung might keep the expandable memory for their a line because you know it’s it’s an affordable way to get. You know more storage in your device, so i would say that this is a very good option in terms of storage, just because you get a whole bunch of storage for not a whole lot of money on a smartphone. Okay, so let’s revisit the cameras here so i’m going to use this lambo car toy in the background for a sample. But you can see right here. We do have the regular angle and then go ahead and go into this ultra wide angle, right here, a very fun camera to use.
You can go up to 4x. You can also go 10x on this camera and the results are typical. Samsung you’re going to get pretty good overall color results and i’ve just been pretty happy with this camera for the price. Now it also has a macro camera as well, so allow you to get really really close on things i mean extremely close. So if you’re, like the type person who likes those detailed up, close photos where the camera is like right on your nose, you definitely can use this camera for that. In addition, it does have a depth sensor, which is kind of a useless sensor. In my opinion, i think most people would probably prefer a telephoto over a depth sensor, but that does help in portrait and video because let’s face it on these cheaper cameras. You know they could help out giving you more of a convincing blur in the background, but i will say on the front facing camera: a 32 megapixel produced some pretty sharp results for this phone. Although you couldn’t take the highest quality video on the front or the rear that’s, where you will have a better performance on flagship phones, so if we go to rear video size, it tops out at uhd 30. You can’t even do 4k 60 on this one and on the front, video size, let’s, see where it tops out. Uhd 30 as well, so not the highest quality but acceptable. Nonetheless, and let me show you some of the samples that were achieved with the a51 you can see, this is a night shot, pretty darn acceptable.
I’M. Pretty fine with this also very good you’ll notice that the detail is just not quite flagship grade, but it’s still good. I mean it’s still acceptable for what you’re going to pay for this phone. So you’ll see right here as you zoom in gets a lot blurrier. A lot better processing is going to happen on the s series, but if we go down here, you’ll see in the daylight you’ll get more detail for sure. So when you zoom in you’ll, get more detail here, the phone just does a very good job with adequate lighting, and i think this phone right here is camera results speak for themselves. They do pretty good for the money and i think that the a52 should outshine this one, and this is an area i do want to see big upgrades for the next device, so the a51 has a 4 000 milliamp hour battery and the battery has been superb On this phone, mostly because it’s not pushing a lot of power or a super high resolution, 1440p display. So this day this was like a day and a half phone right here for me. Definitely strong battery life, not the strongest standby time like most samsung devices, but still very strong battery life. It does get a little bit warm under gaming, but i found that the battery life held on just fine for the a51. It can charge up to 15 watt fast charging, so not the fastest again, but still pretty fast.
Okay. So now an area that has been kind of disappointing for this phone is the audio because it’s a single, loud speaker and it’s, not that loud it’s, not that clear. So i would like to see even if samsung throws a cheaper, you know speaker, setup, dual speaker setup in here. That would be nice, even if it’s not the best. I would like to see stereo speakers on the the future. A series phone like this now mobile performance has been strong reception, very good on this phone 4g lte, though, on this model they did have a 5g one, so you might want to get the 5g one if you’re looking for you know more longevity, however, i’m, not Sure the a51 is going to be worth it anymore, as the a52 is on its way area of this phone. That kind of disappoints me is the fingerprint sensor, not because it doesn’t work. I just kind of think it look. It feels better to be like right here, it’s kind of low, and you kind of got to hold it sometimes a little bit longer than you would like, and it misses more often it’s not going to miss, of course, in the video. But it misses more often than i would like, and there goes a little bit of lag right there, but it misses more often than i would like. I know you got ta hold down longer. I just found it to be not quite as accurate as some of the other samsung phones on the market.
In conclusion, is this phone worth buying? Is it a deal or not? I think at this point. This phone is not really worth buying anymore, just because the a52 is coming out. If you want to save a dollar or two at least get the 5g version of the a51. But i don’t think the a52 is going to be much more than this phone right here. So you might as well just wait at this point, but a year later has it held on uh pretty well, but there’s a lot of areas. This phone needed some upgrades, but i think it was a good overall package, a good overall value for somebody who wanted. You know just the basic samsung functionality, but they didn’t want to get a phone that looked kind of dated. They wanted something that looked a little bit more modern, but didn’t need the fanciest phone on the block.
