This is one of the first few laptops in the market that adopted ryzen mobile cpus on the high end for premium gaming laptops and in this video i’m going to be reviewing the g14 for you guys and disclaimer. This is the 2020 edition of the g14. There is also a 2021 edition of the g14 which i’ll compare to in this video i’ll talk about the 2021 edition, what’s upgraded, what’s changed and which one you should be buying. So everything you need to know about. The asus rog zephyrus g14 will be in this video, so watch till the end, and that being said, let’s get started Music all right. So, starting off with the main, highlight feature of this laptop and that’s, the performance that’s, the hardware it packs inside it has a ryzen, 9, 4 900 hs cpu with the rtx 2060 max q graphics card. Now it also has 16 gigabytes of ram and a one terabyte pci nvme ssd, but the ryzen 9 cpu, coupled with the rtx 2060, gives you some really nice gaming performance and it’s able to play all the modern aaa titles, as well as the esports titles. Like valerian cs go pubg, dota, 2 league of legends world of warcraft. Basically any game you throw at it 1080p should be no problem. You can, you know, play medium to max settings and get really healthy frame rates and it’s a really fun experience. You know playing on this laptop as well.
Now it has its quirks, but in terms of performance, cinebench, r23 geekbench, basically it’s good for video editing as well as gaming. Now the specs aside, let’s talk about what’s changed in the 2021 edition, so the 2021 zephyrus g14 comes with the 5000 series amd ryzen cpu, so they come with ryzen 950 900 hs. Now there are other variants of this laptop with you know: lower end cpus and lower in graphics cards like a gtx, 1660 ti or ryzen 7 cpu. If you wanted to save money, but we’ll talk about the top end, the best of the best that asus has to offer so yeah in the new. You know: 2021 g14. You get the 5000 series cpus from amd, as well as you get a 30 70 or a 3080, so rtx, 3070 or 3080, and a laptop now that’s, some really nice power and something else. That’S changed in the 2021 g14 is the display and the battery. Now, talking about the display on this laptop it’s got a 14 inch, 120 hertz full hd ips panel. Now this is a really nice panel in terms of color accuracy and stuff, like that. It’S got 96 percent rgb as well as 70 adobe rgb. Now, yes, it’s, not a perfect panel. The response time is not the best here and there are some ghosting issues, but i would go with the 120 hertz panel any day for gaming there’s, also a 1440p hertz panel in the 2020.
You know g14, but i only recommend that if you want to do video, editing or you’re not going to play, you know esports titles you’re, fine with the 60 fps. You know just 68 hertz experience, but talking about the 2021 g14 you get 165 hertz 1440p display. So that’s a big upgrade in my opinion and that’s a better panel as well, and the other major upgrade is going to be the battery. Now. The battery on this laptop is a 76 watt hour battery and you get good. You know battery life from this. If you’re, not gaming, if you’re just doing normal stuff normal browsing going around windows, you know opening files and stuff like that. You’Ll get six to eight hours, no problem, and yes, the power break that comes with this laptop is also not that big, like it’s a light one and it’s, not that huge as well. Not that bulky so it’s easy to carry around so yeah. You can also charge it up by a usb type c we’ll talk about that later, but the new g14 2021 edition comes with a 96 watt hour battery which, in my opinion, is going to give you better battery life. But again you have higher end specs to handle, as well as a better quality display higher resolution display. But again the bigger battery is worth it now, if you were to ask me just right now, which one should i go for, you should buy the 2021 asus g14 that’s.
The answer just go ahead and get the 2021 edition of the asus rog surface g14. But talking about the rest of the things which are pretty much the same on both the laptops, the 2020, as well as the 2021 edition and starting off with the build quality. So you’ve got polycarbonate as well as a magnesium alloy and the laptop is built really well, although it might not feel very premium because it’s you’re not really touching metal anywhere, it might feel like it’s. You know plasticky, but again, it’s built really well. There is basically very less you know, flex on the body itself and there’s no deck flex, either like the keyboard and stuff it’s pretty solid, like it’s built like a tank, and i think you can take it around. Although the color choices, you know, might vary, if you are into white, you would have to take good care of it. So that’s that, and talking about your i o situation, the kind of ports you’ve got you’ve got two usb type cs and two usb a’s. Now, they’re, really, you know fast and stuff, but there’s no thunderbolt support, because this is an amd. Laptop you’ve got a hdmi as well as a headphone jack and towards this side, you’ve got your charging or like just power input and around the laptop. You have vents and talking about vents. This laptop also has asus ergo, lift technology, which is when you open the lid up the you know, screen kind of pushes the keyboard towards the top angling it in that ergonomic direction, for you to type and the ergo lift itself is really nice and it.
You know puts the laptop in a very nice position to type on and use, but the ventilation is designed in a way that all the hot air comes out this way and it hits the display. So the bottom part of the display is usually pretty hot when you’re gaming and stuff, like that, so that’s that now talking about performance, the laptop does heat up and makes a lot of noise. So if you’re doing anything relatively heavy, the laptop will crank up up to 91 degrees celsius and that’s the max temperature. I could pull off. You can go up to 95 if you’re, like stress, testing or something like that. It doesn’t throttle much it’s able to keep at least 3.2 gigahertz minimum and it does turbo up to 4.2. So yeah. There is a little bit of throttling if i would say, but again the performance is good. The thermals are stable, but acoustics. Yes, the fans do make a lot of noise, so you’ll have to put on headphones or something like that or, if you’re connecting it to an external monitor. You wouldn’t really hear it so that’s that now talking about your other gaming experience, the keyboard and the trackpad. Now again, you’ll have to connect a mouse if you’re gaming or something like that just get something from razer or logitech. If you’re into you know good wireless mice for gaming, the keyboard itself is really nice it’s. Well, you know spaced out there’s a good layout.
The travel is good, the feedback is good, they’re tactile, they don’t feel mushy it’s, not a cheap keyboard. You’Ve got your volume control here, as well as a mic, mute and unmute, as well as a button for the rog software, which is just overly nerdy. In my opinion, they can clean it out in a recent update or something like that. But again the keyboard is nice, but the back lighting isn’t, the backlighting isn’t super bright, so it’s easier to see the keyboard and the letters without the backlight and when you do turn it on the backlight is kind of not so uniform. So there is some leaking around certain keys, which i didn’t like, and you know such a premium laptop when you’re paying so much amount of money. I would expect asus to give you better backlight, but again the trackpad is nice. The tracking is very good. The drivers are good, so nothing to worry about there and talking about the speakers on this laptop they’re, not the best speakers but they’re good they’re, really good. In my opinion, like they get. You know decently loud and they’re, clear, there’s, no distortion, there’s, good quality, and i really like them Music. Now talking about upgradability, i really like how easy it is to get you know inside this laptop you just open up the screws with a screwdriver which is easily available, they’re, not proprietary or anything like that. There’S, no seals you just open it up and inside it’s.
Again very easy: you’ve got your pci ssd now that’s pci2, so it’s not really fast and you’ve got your wi fi six card below the ssd and you’ve got one stick of user upgradable ram. Because again, one of the sticks is going to be sorted on by the manufacturer and you can add up to 16 gigabytes now, if you get the you know, g15 or the better variant with this laptop you’ll get 16 gigabytes by default, and you can add 16 More so you’ll have a total of 32, but on this laptop i have got 16 gigabytes, so let’s say i do remove one of the sticks. I can max it out at 24 gigabytes so again. Keep that in mind. Um, basically we’re through all the main points that i had and yeah the things that i didn’t like was the keyboard backlighting, as well as the fingerprint sensor. Now i really appreciate asus giving the fingerprint sensor in the power button. It works very well when it does, but when it doesn’t i’d say it is not very you know accurate or consistent. It might be accurate, but it’s not very consistent, like you know, maybe three or four times out of ten it doesn’t work and it’s kind of annoying when it doesn’t. So again, i think they can improve that. You know in their future versions, so that’s that uh there’s, no webcam on this laptop – yes, even in this day and age, very webcams are very important for basically everything we do.
This doesn’t have one you’ll have to get an external one. You can get a wired one from asus itself, they make webcams or you can get something from logitech or aukey or i’ll try to link up some webcams for you guys, but overall, my thoughts on this laptop. I like this one, but this is the 2020 edition. There’S also a better version of this laptop already available. The 2021 edition i recommend, go with the rtx 3070, with the ryzen 9 and you’ll be a happy man at the end of the day and that’s pretty much it for my review, that’s my two cents on the asus rog zephyrus g14. I give you guys a quick comparison between the 2020 as well as the 2021 edition. The speakers are also different on the new one, but again overall, i like this laptop and also there’s. This dotted finish on the top they used to have the anime matrix display, which i think they’ve taken it out now, but again i like this it’s premium. It feels good, it performs good and it lasts longer so yeah those are my two cents on the asus rgz g14.
