We’Re about to take a look at two of the more recent variants. And you might be surprised., Hey Trav. Can you think of some cliches that people generally apply to sports cars Yeah sure there are a lot.? I mean they’re expensive. They’re uncomfortable. They’re hard to park, poor fuel economy. It’s, not a lot of luggage, space. They’re generally impractical. Yeah, I mean all of that is true. Except I don’t think it applies to the two that are behind us. Corvettes have always been some Of the most easy to use and practical sports cars you can buy. And over the years, they’ve just become more efficient and even more practical.. Hi I’m Travis from Edmonds. CLEARS THROAT. Oh all, right, I’m Elana.. We test and review hundreds of cars every year, while CarMax buys sells and expertly appraises, thousands. We’re, combining our car testing knowledge with CarMax’s experience to help you make the right choice on your next car.. If you like, this video hit like and subscribe for more., If you have a Corvette story that you’d like to share in the comments, we’d love to see it. And if you want an in depth article about the Chevrolet Corvette click, the link below.. If you have even a passing interest in performance, cars you’ve already recognized this as a C8 code for eighth generation. Eighth design Corvette Stingray.. If you aren’t interested in performance cars, but suddenly felt the hankering to develop an interest, there’s no better place to start than with America’s, most famous sports car.
When it was introduced in 1953, the little six cylinder roadster didn’t have much in common with the roaring race Car that it would become., I mean it, looked cool and it was made of fiberglass and it started two.. I guess all that’s the same., But over the years the Vette got bigger swoopier and much much faster. Chevrolet has made the Corvette every year, except for quick quiz. Do you know If you said 1983 you’re right. Chevy took a gap year. And there’s. Only one 1983 Corvette known to exist.. Luckily, for you, there are lots of the more recent models. And with a reputation for performance at a price, much less than European rivals like the Porsche 911 or occasional American competitors like the Dodge, Viper or Ford GT. Putting a Vette on your wish list can be both affordable and practical.. More on that later.. This car was a big deal when it was introduced in 2020. Because for the first time in Corvette history, the engine 6.2 liter, naturally aspirated V8, making nearly 500 horsepower was not under the hood in the front. But behind the cabin mid engine, baby. How’d, they fit all those ponies in there It’s a lot of horses in a little space., Because this is such a new design. You probably won’t see as many of them on dealer lots as previous generations., But they are out there. And we’ll likely see more as Chevy introduces more performance versions of this model.
. Now these are a lot easier to find.. This 2019 is only a year older., But the styling differences are pretty stark. Yeah they’re, both easily recognizable as Corvettes., But which one do you, like. The looks of more That’s going to be your first choice when shopping for a Corvette., But if you land on the C7, it was available from 2014 to 2019.. So that means there are a lot of colors a lot of trim levels, a lot of options and performance variants to choose from like this Z06. And if you don’t, like the Z06 there’s the base Stingray or the Grand Sport, even the fully bonkers ZR1. There’s. A lot to choose from when it comes to the last front, engine Corvette. For all the nitty gritty details, though, be sure to click that link for the article below.. The first thing you think of when you see a Corvette, probably isn’t utility., But Chevrolet – has prided itself on the Corvette’s large cargo area for decades.. The standard unit for measurement for Vette owners has always been the golf bag., But, as you can see here, we managed to fit 15 bags of groceries in the C7’s trunk and 10 in the combined cargo areas in the C8. Compared to rivals like the Porsche 911. The Corvette has always had a generous storage space. That’s, not just for golfers anymore.. First things. First, I love the Z06 in this color combo.. I like the silver on the outside black wheels and then the red brake calipers, the tie in with everything red in here.
The red stitching, the red seats, the red shift, paddles, the red seatbelts, great touches., Now back to business. I do like how usable and spacious this interior feels compared to the C8. Yeah sure they’re, both two seat sports cars., But with no engine behind you and no glass right behind your head. It feels more airy back here., Plus the fastback design means. Essentially, you can put whatever you want back there. One of our staffers took the front wheel off his mountain bike and threw it in the back of a C7 that we used to own. That’s super useful. And the interior materials are great, too. Sure it’s, not a 911 in here., But there’s a lot of soft touch. Points. And the buttons are easy to see. Stuff’s within an arm’s reach., And this will totally be fine in daily driving or on a road trip. And one more thing: there’s also a little secret agent trick.. You press this screen button and there’s storage behind the infotainment screen for your smartphone.. You can put your smartphone back there and charge it so it’s not flying around when you’re racing on the racetrack., With the addition of performance there’s, sometimes a corresponding drop in practicality. Moving. The engine to the back of the Corvette makes for quicker acceleration times better handling, and it just feels more exotic. I mean only the wildest supercars are doing mid engine stuff right. The downside is that the cabin does feel more cramped without that big trunk behind you.
And for short drivers. Like me, this continental divide of a console is straight up: claustrophobic. It’s, a little bit better. If you sit farther back. Materials in general are more consistently nice than you’ll find in a C7 Corvette., But it’s not like a 200000 AMG Mercedes or a McLaren.. On the other hand, it costs less than half as much as those cars and it’s pretty much just as fast., So how important is an Alcantara headliner to you anyway, We started out this video with a laundry list of all the reasons why it’s hard to daily Drive a sports car., You know they don’t have any ground clearance.. You can’t see out of them.. You know, they’re, just difficult right. Well, Corvette solves all of those problems with technology.. It has multiple different camera angles. So you can see if there’s a parking block you’re going to run the front splitter into or if you’re, going to run over your kid’s bike backing up. Has blind spot warnings.. So if you’re driving along you need to change a lane, no problem., You can see if somebody’s there, even if you can’t see if somebody’s there. This car also has a nose lift.. So if you’re going into a steep driveway or over speed bumps you just boop up and over. All right Corvette very useful when they’re parked., But that is hardly the reason why you’d buy one.. What are they like to drive ENGINE REVVING, All right, so moving the engine from the front of a car to the back means more weight in the back.
And in a rear wheel, drive car like the Corvette. That means you get better traction over those rear. Wheels., Combined with the Corvette’s excellent steering and suspension this car is just a joy to drive.. Its handling is so direct. And it’s, so responsive and just feels really stable. If you’re interested in getting into sports cars or learning how to drive faster. This is a really good car to do it in., Because it’s friendly. And it has all these different settings.. So if you’re feeling nervous, you can leave it in one of the more helpful sports, settings. And it’ll kind of watch out for you with various different traction. aids. And as you get better, you can move into the track settings and use less of the traction controls And stability controls and just trust yourself, a little bit more. On the street. That means you can cruise, along in comfort when you’re sitting on the freeway or you’re just going over some really unpleasant pavement., And if you get to a nice smooth stretch, you can put it in sport and really get on it.. Now this Stingray that I’m in has 495 horsepower, which means ha ha hey it rips. There’s, no manual option in the C8 Corvette. It has a dual clutch transmission, a DCT which is so quick. There’s, no way that I could shift any faster.. Another nice thing about the various modes in the C8 is that there’s, a custom, setting.
And there’s a little button here on the steering wheel that you can put it in.. So if you like the sound of the engine in track mode – or maybe you like the steering feel, but you don’t like that – really stiff suspension you’d rather have it in a more comfortable mode. You can set your own settings. And it’ll. Just one click button, it’s! Exactly how you want it., It just wants to make you happy this car., Obviously we’re at a track. And if you’re going to go to a track in any car you’re going to want to be sure to check the fine print on your service and warranty plan. To make sure what you’re doing is covered or not covered., And if you go to a track, you’re also going to have to pass a tech or safety inspection. So be sure to follow all the track rules and bring all the proper gear.. Now, on to the business of the C7. Let’s talk about how the C7 drives. We had the 2014 C7 Stingray in our long term fleet at Edmunds. And that’s, one of my favorite cars I’ve ever tested.. It was such a great road trip champ, even though it had a seven speed manual. And I drove it all around the Southwest up and down the California coast. All kinds of great places, great scenery in that car., And yet all you have to do – is stamp. The throttle and suddenly you’ve got an amazing sports car with crazy capabilities.
It’s, just such a fun thing to drive.. Now this the Z06 is considerably higher performance. It’s got way more power. And it’s got a lot of parts that you would think, make it a little bit more hardcore which sure it is., But the woo hoo suspension has adaptive dampers. So it’s, not that bad.. It doesn’t beat you up., Even on a racetrack it’s, still pretty comfortable. And daily driving, it wouldn’t be a problem.. Now. This is something worth considering that this car is not quite as quick as the base C8., But I still have such a fun time in it.. It makes such great noises and really is so great to look at.. I just love the look of it. It’s hard to choose between the two., But what I do notice is: did you guys watch our Challenger Charger, video Me and Elana? We were drag racing.. Why am I always in the slower car I don’t know? Maybe it’s a driver, thing. Might be, might be. You know, operator error. Either way. Man is this thing fun to drive.. You only live once. There’s, no time to drive, boring cars.. If you’ve ever had a hankering for something swoopy and quick with a V8 grumble that can clear speed bumps without clearing your bank account there’s, no sports car more accessible than the Chevy Corvette. I’m, not going to tell you which one to get because there’s no wrong. One to get. Just pick the style.
You like pick. Your price point pick how much power you want and start shopping. For all the details on the Vettes in this video click, the link for the article below. And if you’ve got a favorite Corvette story or you think we’d be better off in a Porsche 911. Let us know in the comments.
