I have to clarify that because some people are like, oh did you get paid for this? Are they doing this? Did you did samsung hire you? They did not. I hired myself if that makes sense, so i bought my own money and i’ve been using it just to give you guys proof not that you didn’t, believe me, but anyway, i’ve been using it and i’ve already done kind of my initial impressions kind of like hey. I changed my mind like here’s, why i changed my mind, but there’s also some proxy benefits and some things i didn’t expect and so let’s get into it right away. Number one: if you’re gon na use this in public just be prepared right, people are gon na. Ask you so unless you know, if you’re super shy with nothing wrong with that, just be prepared, because if someone sees you open and fold they’re going to be interested and i’ve already experienced it a handful of times and they’re respectful, you know they’re not trying to Hold or anything but like did that just fold in half and so it’s kind of fun, because the next point i want to bring up is people are definitely interested. You may not be, and you might have been like me, but people are actually really interested in folding phones. Now that doesn’t mean they’re ready to go, buy one, but conceptually they understand what it’s good for and that, i think, is key to focus right.
We can go on and on about the price and about fragility and all those things and they’re valid conversations, but the fact that people are genuinely interested in and they were coming up a anecdotal to me, but they were like oh that’d – be cool to do this. That’D be cool to do this so to me, that’s a good sign overall, because at the end of the day, yes it’s, expensive right but here’s the thing the price is going to come down just like any technology as it ages, as other companies figure out how To manufacture it and make similar products and as r d gets their money back right, the cost is supposed to come down now. Listen phones are expensive across the boards foldables in another world, but that still makes me excited for the future off portables. If you will – and if you haven’t seen my uh recent video, i talk about the things that are getting upgraded in the fold. Three i’m excited for again. It shows that samsung’s digging their heels in they’re, not doing this for fun and then they’re going to just let it go the next day in fact, they’re, making it more durable, they’re, adding the s pen, which is going to be crazy, and so one thing i Want to talk about, though, is the the outside display right this this display here i actually. This is my use case and i’m going to be perfectly honest with you.
The outside display is nice because these days right, when you get a normal slab phone, if you get a 6.5 inch 6.9 like they’re, big phones – and you had a case like they’re bulky but they’re nice, because you get a big display, you can see more. Do more what’s interesting is that i find myself liking having both options within one phone, because when i’m out about – and sometimes i don’t have, the ability to use both hands for the phone. This smaller display it’s kind of tall like a sony, xperia it’s, really tall and narrow it’s nice to have that because you can still use it. One handed for the most part and it’s great just to glance at whatever and do your thing. But when you’re sitting here casually or you’re somewhere out and about and you’re just chilling being able to open it up and have a bigger screen than you would, with a pro max or an s21 ultra or bigger phone that’s kind of nice, you get the best Of both worlds, because i know a lot of people these days – they’re tired of these gargantuan phones, but they also like the idea of having a bigger screen and this kind of solves both and you pay for it. I’Ll say that you definitely pay for it, but i really like that. Another thing that i found interesting is battery life’s, actually better than i thought now, maybe because of the size of the display and the fact that there’s technically is the three or two.
I guess one inside display and one on the outside and it’s thin right i’m, like this thing’s, not gon na, be lasting, that long right, it’s not gon na last very long. I was wrong. The battery life is pretty good. Now i can say this. I don’t record a ton of video and i also don’t play games. So if you do those two things, if you’re trying to record in 1080p, 60 or 4k, if you’re trying to play call of duty mobile for like seven hours, i can’t speak to that. I could just give you my experience and, if you’ve been here before, you know that for battery life i typically and even cameras to a certain extent. I don’t like to foist my usage onto like i’m just saying i maybe not be nearly as a heavy user as you might be so for me to tell you hey it has great battery life or that it has bad battery life isn’t, actually being genuine, because Your use case your settings, all of those things in the background that are running everyone, has it tailored differently. So i can’t tell you that it’s going to be great for you, but i can say it was good for me. You have to decide that but it’s been surprisingly good. Another thing that i wasn’t expecting – and i know these are kind of odd, but again i think a lot of people before you jump into software and all those things they’re like wait a minute.
What about all of these things here, which is sturdiness right, so i definitely had some reservations because i’m, like okay, you got to baby this thing. The first fold did have a little bit of a debacle launching, but i think they got it figured out it’s. Actually, a lot more sturdy than i thought, i’m, not going to say you don’t have to baby it, but i would say if you already take care of your devices and you’re, not one to like throw it in a bag and like play bop it with it. You’Re, probably gon na be okay, it’s it’s a lot more resilient or, i should say resilient, but it’s a lot more sturdy if you will than people make it out to be – and this is what i find again, this is anecdotal. I find that people that don’t own it are the first to tell you how fragile and how it’s gon na break i’m like. Would you have it? Well? No, but i saw a video and someone told me like okay, i get that right, word of mouth sure and especially considering the first launch with the first fold, people kind of like okay. This is crazy, but i can say man i i’ve not dropped. It. Obviously. I’M done crazy, but i use it like. I would any other phone and that’s, probably the best praise i can give it. I don’t, like i don’t, have like shaking in the gloves.
I got ta open, it make sure there’s, no dust you’re not like doing anything like that. You just use it and it’s fine. Having said that, if you are someone that is concerned whether you work outside in the elements, it has no ip rating, if it does have any it’s, probably it’s, probably a little water resistant, but a lot of times. Well, all the times you have to pay to get that rating right. You submit this to a, i guess, a company that will then test it say. Yes, it meets these standards and so there’s like one plus a couple years ago. They probably have some water resistance, but it’s not enough for them, or maybe they wanted to keep the cost down. They didn’t get it certified, so i’m, not saying go, get it wet i’m, just saying it’s, probably okay to a certain degree, but it’s, certainly not going to be like. I went scuba diving and i dropped my phone in the lesser antilles and now i have it and it’s fine. I wouldn’t do that, but that’s been that’s been surprising and it’s nice to hear that in the next fold, which hopefully is coming out in july or august it’s going to take that to the next level it’s going to offer an ip rating it’s going to have A thicker display s pen support more durable frame, that’s exciting, but if you’re worried about durability as long as you’re, not someone that’s working in certain, you know environments where you’d want to be concerned, i think you’ll be okay again, barring price being a hurdle because it Is for some people um, and the last thing i want to talk about is this again.
This is a brief. This is like a vlog in my experience. Um. It is, i think, there’s a slice of this. That is the future. I mean all these companies are trying to tell you that it’s the future right, because they got to crank up the marketing to 11 to get you to buy a 2000 phone. What i can say is that there is a market for it and i do think those people once they start like i’m having such a hard time putting this down i’m like even right now it won’t go down. I can’t put it down obviously i’m kidding, but i find it so natural to want that right, because, when you’re sitting there casually, you want a bigger display who doesn’t want a bigger display when you’re trying to view content and the industry for a while has been Trying to figure out like how do we make bigger displays smaller bezels still, you know good battery life, it still works in your one hand, but really not, and so the devices have gotten bigger, and so i think samsung just like they did. With the original note series right remember, they got they, they got lambasted. This is like a toaster. This is too big. No one wants this. Who wants a phone? This big everyone copied them? Listen: i’m, an apple person to a certain degree. They got they copied right. They made the phones bigger, and so i think this is it’s going to go down a similar route where you have a lot of naysayers, including me at one point in time and now you’re going to see this transition into like oh well, like here’s, i i Could see why you know people want this? I understand you know.
Maybe it is the future you’re going to see that conversation kind of spin slowly but it’s going to get there, and especially considering that another rumor not to turn this into a rumor video but apparently they’re, making a light version of this. So, like an sc, probably not that cheap, but one that can get someone’s foot in the door and cost isn’t a massive barrier to that entry, if you will so i’m excited. But those are the things that i’ve noticed again be ready for people to be like what do you? I mean i notice people staring from like across the room like what is he doing because it’s not natural to see a screen like this, and then someone go like that. People like what in the world and two again battery life was really good for me, but it might not be for you. You got to look at your use case and your usage. You can’t just go milliamp hour to milliamp hour because there’s a lot of things in between right, processor, efficiency, background task, all that stuff matters. So i can’t tell you that it’s gon na be perfect for you. I can tell you what’s good for me and i’m on my phone i’m, not trying to sit here like i don’t use it. I used it for a minute i’m on it a lot. I just don’t do anything intensive as they say i’m, not playing flappy birds in call of duty side by side.
Split screen is nice, though, for consuming content. Um again battery life was great uh, the one handed mode on that front screen. I am i’m a fan of that man. I like again it’s like having a compact phone in one and then when you need a bigger phone, you open it up and bam. You got a little tablet: slash phone that’s, pretty cool it’s sturdier than i anticipated. So that’s a major positive, because i, when i first got this, i definitely handled it with like kid. Like gloves. I’M like this is scary, and then, as i used it, you get more comfortable. If that makes sense, you start okay, okay, oh actually, it’s, not that bad, and so, if you’re concerned about that again, barring you working in like a like a sandstorm or something like that or underwater deep sea diver or something i think, you’ll be okay and two. It does feel like this is the future for some people, and i see this again being very similar to the note line where people roast today, who wants a stylus who wants a big screen and then everyone copy to a certain degree or another. So you, let me know in the comments below what you think do you think it’s the future. Are you kind of like me where maybe there’s some truth to that? Maybe we’re not there now and i would argue i would agree with that – we’re not there today, especially at this cost right i mean data has proven that people aren’t spending more than a thousand.
At least they don’t want to they’re buying. If you don’t know quarter one of this year, 2021 right, they people could bought the iphone 12 pro 12 pro max. The 12 mini whatever the number one selling phone beginning this year for apple, was the iphone 11 regular. So that shows you where the industry is versus, where the tech bubble is right, we’re all spending money on gadgets to some degree or another. Everyone else is going in and getting the cheap one right. So keep that in mind again, when i say excuse me that this is the future, because you know i know i think i think the folding is but not the price. I guess i should say, but anyway hey. Let me know in the comments below how you feel if you have one.
