I thought i’d, give you a glimpse behind the scenes of me on the move in the mobile world, so welcome to my mobile office as a husband, father and son. I find myself hanging around for family members or resting on long journeys to visit them, etc. So i wanted to make that time more productive. This is my office. Now the challenges of a mobile office are threefold. First of all, space i’m – not a fan of you, know, sitting in the driver’s seat, steering wheel cramped up so both seats far forward tilted forward slightly i’m in the back and i’ve got loads of space. I drive a ford c max mini mpv or remember that mpv stands for multi purpose vehicle so i’m, certainly fulfilling that now. Remember that mpv’s also have plenty of headroom, so it doesn’t feel too claustrophobic and if i want to i’ve, got the middle seat, which folds down as a makeshift table if i’ve got paperwork to sort out or other items. I deal with the privacy aspect with these sort of popped in window shades. They just sit in the groove on the windows and stop people looking in maybe admiring the tech thinking about nicking it later. I could put something in more permanent, but these do the job and they still let in some light. The next challenge is connectivity. The uk mobile networks are now pretty good on motorway service stations even out in the country.
You can get 4g usually and 5g on the iphone 12 pro max, shooting this on the pixel 4 a5g each acting as a wi fi hotspot. For my other technology works really well, and if all of that fails on giftgaff, i think on o2 i’ve got the lumia 1020 from 2013, which is a great camera still and again provides an emergency hotspot. So what do i do with the connections? Well, usually hook up my trusty microsoft surface go windows, 10 is diminutive, it looks so much like an ipad. I get to take it anywhere without my wife asking questions about taking my work with me. Yes, it’s not the fastest pc in the world, but it’s very adaptable. You can take the keyboard on and off. You can use it as a media. Watcher it’s got a built in stand. It’S got plenty of storage via microsd it’s, a winner. The microsoft surface goes my main connection work device when i’m on the go, or indeed any other laptop. Now i often take along my aging, but still pretty good 2010 white macbook don’t laugh i’ve maxed out the ram i’ve got a brand new fast ssd i’ve got a new optical drive new batteries. It triggers broom all over again, but it works really well. It’S got an optical drive two usb a magsafe connector here, connected to my car’s 12 volt of which, more in a moment it’s a really decent laptop it’s, not the fastest, but it does everything i want to do, and indeed more than some of the current apple Macbooks do now the final challenge is power i’m, not going to sit here with my engine idling for hours and it’s very unecological, so i’ve gone for an all dc solution from the ford c max’s three 12 volt outlets front mid and in the rear.
The front goes to the dash cam and the qi enabled phone holder. Then, in the middle of the cabin we have a usb out to the lightning input of a thirty thousand milliamp hour, a romos power bank, all while i’m driving this power store is topped up from the cars alternator there’s, almost unlimited electrical power when you actually go On the move, then, when stationary i take the pd type c out of the surface, go for example, or any other accessories, and i’ve got two other smart, usb a’s to drive or charge anything else i want. So all this recharging is happening from the 30 000 milliamp power bank from the power store and not from the car’s battery, which i think is pretty cool, and then this gets topped up again. Next time you set off in practice the power bank rarely gets below. Half full, even when i’m stopped for a couple of hours with a number of hungry smartphones and tablets. The only remaining device to power is, of course, this macbook. If i’ve taken it along now traditionally car campers and so forth, they have an inverter something that converts 12 volts to 240. Then they take along the laptop’s mains power supply and they plug that into the inverter and then the the mains power supply for the laptop. Then converts it back to dc for the laptop, which is just crazy and incredibly inefficient, you’re losing up to 50 of your power.
My solution is to use the manufacturer, in this case apple’s own 12, volt dc cable, so no inverter, no inefficiencies, no wasted power and minimum drain on the car battery. My ford’s boot accessory 12v accessories outlet is quote always on so the car battery the ignition circuit don’t have to be on when they time out after a quarter of an hour they stay on, which means you can sit here, powering your laptop for a couple of Hours at worst case with the white polycarbonate macbook here and the apple dc connector, it draws about 100 watts when it’s starting to recharge from scratch, and that obviously goes down as the laptop gets charged. But over a couple of hours sitting in a car park, 100 watts is not going to do more than 10 off your car battery, so it’s fairly sustainable. As long as you plan to drive later on that day, so there we go a little more general tech than as usual on the phone show, but it all really hinges on the connectivity, the 5g connectivity of modern smartphones and what you can do with them. A modern, inexpensive, 2021 phone like this uh pixel 485g, is not only a phone, not only a pocket.
