We will take a look at smartphone, gimbal scion, smooth q3. Much like the predecessor, smooth q3 is a significant departure from the previous concept. It reflects on the developments in smartphone videography, and it brings some upgrades that might be very useful for the target audience in this video. We will take a look at how it performs with iphone 12 pro add a feature set, and i will try to help. You decide whether you should get one smooth q3 utilizes, a construction with a long vertical arm, which makes it especially suitable for shooting, with ultra wide lens and for vertical shooting. The first innovation of this gimbal is the sliding arm which makes the gimbal more portable. It only weighs 340 grams, so it is 100 grams lighter than q2. Despite it, it has a long vertical arm. It is very small and portable in collapse. State both arms can also be locked in place, which is very useful for transportation. It is mostly made of plastics, but the build quality is actually quite solid. The quality of plastics is pretty good, and i also like the design included table tripod is pretty long, which means that you can use it as a grip extension for double handed use. The smartphone installation is very easy. The mount is deep enough, so it has no issues with flat, etched iphones in any reasonable case. You just need to slide the smartphone in balance it in horizontal position adjust the vertical position if needed, and you can turn it on smooth q3 always turns on in vertical mode.
If you want to shoot in landscape mode, you need to triple press the trigger with the smartphone properly balanced let’s. Take a look at the smoothness. I always recommend using any smartphone stabilizer together with stabilization in your smartphone. Iphone 12 pro has pretty incredible stabilization, even on its own, so i will say right away that the performance of this combination is great. It is the smoothest footage that i get with any smartphone and gimbal combination. So far, the motors are strong enough and responsive, so holding the camera still or panning is completely smooth. It also works exceptionally well for walking. Q3 can deal very well even with larger movements and the hybrid stabilization in iphone 12. Pro helps a lot with up and down movement, so the overall result is very good. It also works pretty well with telephoto lens that has a solid stabilization as well, and when you use it together with q3, you can get very nice and cinematic looking movement. A big upgrade over smooth q2 is ultra white shooting. Thanks to that long vertical arm, you will never see any part of the gimbal in the frame. I think that the iphone still has the widest lens at 13 millimeters, so it shouldn’t be a problem with any smartphone ultra wide lens doesn’t have optical image stabilization, but it has very effective electronic image stabilization and here again it works great ultra wide angle. Video is easy to stabilize, so you will get extremely smooth footage when you use an ultra wide lens on q3.
A very important thing is that q3 has a sufficient motion range in the tilting axis. This is usually a weakness of gimbals with this construction, but not in this case. Overall, i am very happy with the performance with iphone 12 pro. Please keep in mind that the iphone 12 and 12 pro still have the best video stabilization. I can say that the performance will also be great with iphone 11 pro. If you want to use it with other smartphones, your results may vary. Regarding the controls, there is the on off button record button mode button, joystick, zoom, rocker and trigger button mode button. Lets you cycle through the modes, so we can move forward by single, pressing and backwards by double pressing. The record button obviously works in the zy app and it also works in native iphone app and in filmic pro. If you turn on record with volume, keys single press of the trigger button, activates much tracking, we will get to that later. Double press resets, the gimbal position and triple press is between horizontal and vertical mode. Regarding the modes, you have five modes available. You have the pen follow mode where the gimbal follows your pinning movements and locks the other axes in lock mode. All of the axes are locked and the gimbal will keep the camera pointed in the same direction in follow mode. The gimbal will follow your panning and tilting movements. Pov mode is similar to the follow mode, but here the gimbal will also follow your rolling movements.
The last mode is vortex or flashlight mode, where you can rotate the camera to get the spinning shots. There is also a go mode, which is basically a sports mode which you can activate by holding down the trigger button. There are only two speed or scene modes walk and run, follow, speed and deadzone settings in default. Walk mode are reasonably set, so i didn’t really miss more in depth settings a new feature is the light integrated in the smartphone holder. It is actually pretty useful as a fill light. If you are filming yourself, you can also set the intensity. The light can also be rotated forward. Smooth q3 uses a new zykami app and it is pretty good. It can shoot 4k up to 60 frames per second finally, including 25p, which is extremely important for users in pal region. It also has hdr mode which works pretty well. It also supports slow motion. Video motion lapses and very useful panorama mode. The tracking also works great, which is the main thing that i use the zykami app for. Another new feature is the smart tracking. This basically means that you just need to press the trigger button once and the app will find a subject to track. It works great with faces, and it was also able to find mr mole with no issues. The tracking itself is great. It is very responsive and very smooth. This is the best gimbal tracking that i’ve seen so far.
This feature seems to be very important to a lot of users and the q3 will not disappoint in this regard. As you can see, i still shoot all of my smartphone videos using filmic pro because it provides the best image quality, including 10 bit capture and a very high bit rate. As i mentioned, the recording button works, and that is all that i need to be honest. Smooth q3 has an integrated 1300 milliamp hour battery. The battery life is up to 15 hours, which is great. It still shows four bars after all of my testing. So i definitely don’t have any complaints regarding the battery life. The charging is a bit slower at about 6 watts, but it is good for longevity of the battery, so i don’t mind that either. To sum up, i can say that i’m very happy with this gimbal. First of all, it performs very well in combination with iphone 12 pro. The footage is super stable, basically in every reasonable scenario, which is the most important thing. The gimbal is very small when collapsed, but at the same time it doesn’t limit the shooting, with an ultra wide lens or in vertical mode. The balancing process is very easy, and the controls are also logical. The standout feature is the track ink, which is the best that i’ve ever tested. I only found two disadvantages of this gimbal. The first one is that it is not possible to turn it on in horizontal mode.
I hope that this option will be added in the firmware update. The second thing that i don’t like is that you need to activate the gimbal before you can even use it, which is unfortunately, the case with almost all latest gimbals. Those are pretty minor drawbacks, though, and the overall performance and the feature set is very good. So i can highly recommend science smooth q3, so that’s it for this video.
