I had quite a few questions as to whether or not it’s waterproof. How durable is it and also what’s it like to use with an older phone that doesn’t have the new u1 chipset in it that allows for precision tracking? Can you use it with an older phone, so i have an iphone 6s plus here. We’Ll, try that and first let’s go ahead and pair this and then we’ll try out the other things i mentioned already, such as water durability. So you just unwrap it when you get a new one. I showed this in the unboxing video pull this little piece out of the air tag, and it activates makes a little noise. You bring it close to your iphone, and now it lets you pair it just like it was an airpod airpod pro or airpod max. So we’ll go ahead and hit connect. It says what do you want to name it we’ll name this one water test since we’re, going to test it in water. We’Ll hit continue and let’s name it. Water test we’ll hit continue, and then we can choose an emoji. Let’S choose water. There we go that. One will work and let’s hit continue. Now the air tag is set up, it’s ready to go and according to apple, as far as its durability, with water and dust proof, it’s ip67 rated, which means it can withstand a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. They say it’s, water and dust and splash resistant, so we’ll see how it works under water, maybe a foot down or so now.
The way this is sealed is with a little back cover here with a with a battery underneath. If we push down and turn it, we can take the battery out and you’ll see there’s, not really a rubber seal in here that you can see so let’s pull the battery out you’ll see this is the inside of it, so it’s just plastic, and so this Seal is supposed to be enough to keep it safe. So put the battery back in you’ll, see right here: there’s, not a seal around the outside edge or anything. The batteries in place. We’Ll put the air tag in and then you push down on. The top makes some noise and then it’s locked into place. So it’s sealed you can see the outside edge here. It’S got a little, not a gasket, but a little lip around the edge and it’s sealed and ready to go. So let’s put this down now with the iphone 6s plus. If we go to find my and we take a look at the new one that says water test, we scroll up we’ve got some options. We can play a sound. We have notifications, notify when found lost mode or rename or remove item. If we go to the same app on the iphone 12 pro max, you can see it also has find nearby. So with that u1 chipset, we can actually find it from about 30 to 50 feet away. It will guide us toward the device, so that’s the difference between these other than that they can do the exact same thing.
So if you want to use it with an older device, you can now, as far as water durability. Well, let’s go ahead and check this and see how it holds up in a lake for maybe 30 minutes and an hour we’ll go past. That 30 minutes that they say at one meter see if we drop it in one to three feet of water or a meter of water and see how it holds up now to make sure we don’t lose the air tag itself in deeper water. Let’S go ahead and place it in the air tag loop here, we’ll snap it in place – and this is silicone – so it should withstand this. Okay, so let’s go ahead and test it. Now now i have the air tag here and, as you can see, it’s kind of scraped up and that’s, because it was rubbing up against the camera lenses of the 12 pro max in my pocket, and you can see where it rubbed up against the iphone. A little bit right there, you can just wipe that off, but it’s definitely something that will wear it if it’s rubbing up against glass, for example. Let me go ahead and play a sound now. You can hear it and i’m going to place it in the pond. Right here about a foot under water, we’ll see if we can hear the sound and also come back after a half hour and see how it’s doing so now it’s down here in the muck.
Let me go ahead and play a sound see if we can hear it. You might have seen the air bubbles, but i can’t hear it at all. Now we couldn’t hear a sound from that, but let’s go ahead and tap on, find nearby and also you’ll see. It is 6 45 pm. So let me go ahead and hit find nearby and it says searching for signal. Try moving to a closer location it’s under the water right there, where that stick is right there, so you can kind of see it under the water, so it’s not actually able to find it under the water that well, so, if you dropped it in water, you May not be able to see it or hear it. So let me go ahead and we’ll wait a half hour, so we’ll come back at about 7 15 and see if it still works now, while we’re waiting for the other one for about 30 minutes, or so i figured we’d test this one, maybe just drop it Into the water, so let’s play a sound. I just named it car, so you can hear it so let’s just drop it right there and let’s see how it does. Let me see if i can play a sound, so we’ll go ahead and play a sound. You can hear it just a little bit now i hit find the air tag and you’ll see it’s using the u1 chip to sort of figure out where it is and it vibrates as i get closer, and it sees it so it’s definitely seeing it.
We can hit play make a noise. I can hear it a little bit, but i can’t do that with the other one. So here is the air tag right after i brought it out of the water. I haven’t taken it out of the case, yet you can see it’s a little bit wet still let’s go ahead and see if it plays a sound and it’s working, so it works. If we find nearby you’ll see it locates it. So, even though it wasn’t locatable underwater, it seems to have held up okay let’s see if any water got in it at all, so take the top off here, and so, as you can see, it doesn’t appear that water got inside it at all. It looks pretty good, let me put it back together now, as you can see it’s a little scratched up, like i said from being in my pocket, bumping up against an iphone, but it works quite well after being underwater for about a half hour in about a Foot of water, but don’t expect to find it as you can’t hear it, it actually couldn’t locate it and it was only about a foot. So if you drop it in anything that’s a little bit deep, you may not be able to find it. Unfortunately. Otherwise, though i’d say it’s a win, it held up well and it survived. So maybe if it was in a meter of water – and you could see it, you could grab it and it would still work.
But again i couldn’t locate it when it was underwater. If it’s too far down so hopefully that will help you get a better understanding of the durability overall of an air tag, the battery is rated for about a year or so so as long as it doesn’t get too wet or anything, it should be okay. For that amount of time, and then you can replace the battery if need be. Let me know, though, in the comments below, if you’ve actually picked up an air tag, what you think of them are you using them or do you have no need for them? Obviously, there’s other products out there like tile and everything else, but this works really well with all the different iphones around and you don’t need a separate app to actually use it.
